Common Appliances Usage Chart

Major energy-consuming appliances include refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens, air conditioners, clothes dryers, washing machines, furnaces, and dishwashers. Smaller energy users include clocks, irons, toasters, and a whole range of kitchen and bathroom aids. Below is a breakdown of the most common appliances and their estimated energy requirement.

Comfort Conditioning
Central System, 2 ton1450 kWh

Notes:

  • The central system for comfort conditioning assumes the compressor is continuously thermostat-controlled and operates 55% of the time during the hottest months. (EER-energy efficient ratio)
  • The kWh usage shown is for the constant operation of the compressor for 1 hour. When the unit is operated full-time on a daily basis, subject to thermostat control, the compressor may cycle off up to 40%, and the hourly average cost would be lower.
  • Each dishwasher load uses about 2.5 kWh for hot water. Each washing machine load uses about 5 kWh for a hot wash per hot rinse cycle and about 1 kWh for a warm wash or cold rinse cycle.
  • Energy consumption is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), the units of energy that flow through your electric meter.
